A 15 year-old schoolboy has been charged over the alleged rape of a seven-year-old boy in Far North Queensland.

A police spokesman said today the youngster had been charged with rape following an incident which allegedly occured last month.

However, authorities have refused to confirm reports the alleged attack took place in a schoolyard.

The boy will appear in Cairns Children's Court next week.
