Men have a ball in the name of charity

Charity balls pepper the Brisbane social calendar all year round, but rarely are they run by steering committees comprised entirely of 20-something men.And that was exactly why Tom Marland and a group of his mates decided to start the annual Gentlemen's Ball."We thought there was a lot of focus on female health issues and a lack of charity organisations supporting men's health issues," Mr Marland said."We're all working professionals and young blokes and so I guess we wanted to help out."Each year the committee donates funds raised at the ball to a charity or foundation focused on a particular men's health issue.Past beneficiaries included Community Action for the Prevention of Suicide, the Cancer Council of Queensland and the Prostate Cancer Foundation. This year prostate cancer is in the spotlight again and Mr Marland said the group was shooting for $10,000."Every member of the committee has had some sort of personal experience with a men's health related issue," Mr Marland said."One bloke's dad has had prostate cancer, depression's a big one and we thought we could do something."Tomorrow night's black tie Gentlemen's Ball will be held at Riverlife function centre at Kangaroo Point.A double ticket costs $200.
