Esperance fifth at carnival

5/05/2008 5:37:50 PM
THE Esperance Hockey Association’s under 17 boys team had an interesting bag of results last week in Perth at the Hockey WA State Championships, coming home fifth at the end of the carnival.

The boy’s defence held firm all week just conceding three goals, while the forwards could only manage to score twice in the rounds.

The last game of the rounds saw Esperance meet Avon. Both sides were tied on points at this stage and both had a chance to finish third on the ladder to give them a shot at the grand final.

Esperance dominated the match but they just could not score and the Avon fans were quite happy with the draw at the end of full time.

With the points split, both teams missed the chance to make a grand final appearance.

To rub more salt into their wounds, Avon finished on the same points and the same goal difference, but as they had scored more over the carnival, Avon took fifth spot.

This meant Esperance had defeat Rockingham to avoid the wooden spoon and a rematch against Avon.

The next morning the Esperance boys took to the field with a vengeance with Liam and Jordan Florisson, Rick Graham and Ashleigh Bowman all scoring to give Esperance a 4-1 win.

The re-match against Avon, like the previous day, was dominated by Esperance, but this time Ashleigh Bowman made sure that Esperance won by scoring a hat-trick.

Back in the goals after his big run on the field in their last encounter, goalie Jason Taylor was not giving any Avon players any opportunity to score.

The 3-0 win gave the Esperance boys fifth spot but knowing that they had drawn with one team and beaten the other team in the grand final, they knew that they could have done better.

The side thanks Ken Duffy and Danny ‘Chook’ Henderson for their bus driving skills and Byron ‘Mr’ Florisson for doing the manager’s job.
