THE Tigers’ dream season continued on Sunday as Gibson brought Ports’ three game winning streak to a screeching halt, leaving the club feeling more than a little Blue after an impressive 75-point win at Gibson.
Despite entering the game with two hard games under their belt in recent weeks and coming up against a quietly confident Blues combination, the Tigers were never in doubt of taking their eighth win of the season.
But it was not easy early as the Tigers were pressed by the Blues for much of the first half, and this reflected on the scoreboard with only six points splitting the two teams at the main break.
It was the second half that saw Gibson finally hit their straps, picking holes in the Blues’ defence to run away with the match after kicking 12 goals while holding the visitors to just one major for the same period.
With Sasha Bozanich (three goals) in great touch it was a case of the greens with youngster Brodie Green (four goals) and the evergreen Greg Prosser (four goals) really standing out in the Tigers’ forward lines.
Leigh West also figured prominently amongst the Tigers’ best, playing his best game for several weeks while Tye Tyrrell rated highly and Jason Vermeersch did a great job shutting down Nigel Johnston and holding the normally potent Blues’ forward to just one goal for the game.
After three straight wins the loss would have been hard for the Blues after the side promised to take the game up to Gibson during the first half, but the side would have benefited from the result with some important games coming up over the coming weeks.
There were still some good pointers with the efforts of Brock Thompson and Scott Dixon amongst the Blues’ best for the day.
Steve Baker continues to play some great football while Aubrey Jacobs and Brett Landers also maintain consistent form. Eugene Brown continued to impress through the Blues’ back lines and rounded off the better efforts.
Final score: Gibson 17.12 (114) b Ports 5.9 (39).
The Tigers welcomed back Kerrin Burnett for his first game since the early nineties as their reserves side left Ports more than battered and bruised with a massive 159-point win.
Burnett revelled in his return game for the Tigers, living up to his early promise with an awesome display that saw him bag eight goals for the game. Brenton Bridges also chipped in with a seven-goal haul.
Mathew Upton and veteran Mick Krugger both played solid games for the Tigers while James Hunt and James Barrett also rated highly, and defender Matthew Brennand rounded off the best.
For the Blues, Ramon Garcia did well through the back lines, Greg Bower and Cameron Sullivan both tried hard with little success while Gary MacDonald and Wes Green rounded off the best with a solid brand of football.
Final score: Gibson 24.15 (159) b Ports 0.0 (0).
