Passenger falls from car

14/05/2008 12:23:00 PM
A YOUNG woman remains in a critical condition in Royal Perth Hospital after a mysterious set of circumstances saw her fall from a moving vehicle travelling along Ridley Road in Grass Patch.

The 22-year old was a passenger in a Toyota Landcruiser driven by her partner and was returning from the Grass Patch Tavern.

At approximately 10.30pm Wednesday night the woman fell from the vehicle, which was estimated as travelling at 65km, sustaining serious facial and head injuries, including fractures.

Both the police and the ambulance were called to the scene, with the ambulance arriving first.

Senior Sergeant Paul Humphries said that the police met the ambulance en route to the incident, at which time the ambulance stopped and a police officer drove the ambulance back to Esperance to allow both ambulance officers to work on the victim.

The major crash unit has been assisting with a forensic examination of the scene and a police surveying unit have drawn up a topographical plan of the area where the incident occurred.

Snr Sgt Humphries would not speculate as to whether the woman had fallen or jumped from the vehicle, stating that investigations were still underway.

“There is nothing suggesting any untoward action but police are investigating all avenues,” he said.

The driver has been charged with driving while having a blood alcohol content in excess of 0.08 per cent and will appear before the Esperance Magistrate’s Court at a date yet to be determined.

The young woman has not yet regained consciousness and remains in the intensive care unit.

She underwent surgery for her head injuries on Friday.
