Leaning library

THE Esperance library isn’t the usual scene for cranes, trucks and construction workers, however a construction team was out in force as the local landmark underwent some major work last week.

According to local builder, John Crawley, the base underneath the Esperance library has become soft, and so to prevent a situation similar to a famous tower in Pisa, the library has been strengthened and stabilised.

Although the outside of the library may look almost identical, underneath the library large concrete foundations have been joined up with the original footing, and large columns have been installed on either side of the library to tie in with key stability areas.

“We’ve virtually tied the whole building up with steel,” Mr Crawley said.

Mr Crawley said the thick walled columns on the outside of the building are completely adjustable to compensate for any further movement of the library.

Work has also been done to stabilise the front of the library.
