THE Esperance Roadwise Committee will once again hold a driver reviver station on the South Coast Highway this Thursday to help get the message out about fatigue and fatigue-related crashes before the ANZAC day long weekend.
Studies show that driving tired can be as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol, with people who have been awake for 20-25 hours producing performance levels similar to those with a blood alcohol content of 0.10 per cent.
Senior constable Murray Pownall of Esperance police said that although there are difficulties in measuring the role of fatigue in serious crashes, it is known to be a factor in 35 per cent of fatal crashes.
“That’s why our local Roadwise group, along with some volunteers, get out there on the highway at busier times – to tell people of the danger and make them take a break and consider ways to avoid fatigue,” Mr Pownall said.
The driver reviver will be held at a truck bay 95 kilometres out of Esperance, near Munglinup, on the South Coast Highway.
Sen Const Pownall said the Roadwise committee is always looking for local volunteers to assist with running these events. Anyone interested in helping should contact him at the Esperance police station during office hours on 9071 1900.
