Celebrating the olympics

31/07/2008 12:20:00 PM
PLANS for two events celebrating the Beijing Olympics became more detailed when students gathered at the Bay of Isles Leisure Centre with Millennium Kids facilitator Megan Hudson to guide them.

Now that the two events ‘Wow! A Fun Day’ and ‘A Surf Event of Olympic Proportions’ have been chosen, the students got into groups to discuss exactly what activities will be involved.

Wow! A Fun Day, created by primary school students from Condingup, Esperance and Star of the Sea Primary schools, will be a day in which children from Grades 4 to 7 will compete against each other in various activities.

These include building sand castles, designing the best face using fruit and vegetables, and creating fashion out of recyclable material.

Students drew inspiration for the event from the television show The Amazing Race.

Like the show, after students complete an activity they will receive a clue as to what and where their next activity will be.

Star of the Sea student Sarah Warren said just like the Olympics, it’s about bringing people together and having fun.

“We hope people will enjoy the day competing against each other and working in teams.”

In the other event, A Surf Event of Olympic Proportions, created by Esperance Senior High School students, high school students will be invited to participate in surfing and body-boarding competitions.

The event will be held at either West Beach or Fourth Beach.

Year 10 student Jacqui Harkness said the surfing idea was their first idea.

“Everyone agreed on the idea because a lot kids in Esperance are really involved with the beach.”

Wow! A Fun Day is scheduled to be held on August 15, and A Surf Event of Olympic Proportions on September 20.

Both events are part of The Quest program, which is facilitated by the West Australian based youth environmental organisation Millennium Kids Inc, and sponsored by BHP Billiton.
