Drug Action Week film produced by students
4/07/2008 | ESPERANCE Senior High Schools (ESHS) students put the finishing touches on a film they had been making just in time to premiere the DVD as part of Drug Action Week last week. The DVD, which was made by several year 10 and 11 students, provided information about the consequences of risky behaviour, such as drug and alcohol abuse, as well as self harm.
Driver changes welcomed
4/07/2008 | HANGES to L and P plate driving restrictions for novice drivers came into effect on Monday June 30 as part of a government effort to protect young drivers from serious injury. Research has shown that P plate drivers in their first year of unsupervised driving are eight times more likely to be involved in an accident where the passenger is killed than those who have been driving for more than a year.
4/07/2008 | WITH the Tour D’Esperance just around the corner, the Esperance Shire has received $42,000 in funding from a State Government scheme designed to improve cycling facilities in regional WA. The money will be used to create a 1,762 metre asphalt shared path on Twilight Beach Road, to provide additional walking and cycling opportunities for residents and the many tourists who visit the area.
Funding sought for jetty
4/07/2008 | THE Tanker Jetty could soon have a different title incorporating the name of a company if that company becomes a major contributor to the maintenance of the jetty. The Esperance Community Alliance, which includes the Esperance Shire, the Chamber of Commerce, Esperance Regional Travellers Association and the Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission, is currently drafting a proposal seeking corporate sponsorship for the Tanker Jetty and working towards a set management plan of up to 20 years.
Celebrating our French connection
4/07/2008 | ESPERANCE has always had a deep historical connection with France, and it is this connection that will be celebrated at the upcoming La Recherché Weekend, from July 11-13. A highlight of the weekend will be the two-day Tour d’Esperance cycle race, beginning Saturday at 2pm with a 20 kilometre time trial event, with the main race held on Sunday, which will be a 50 kilometre race taking in five circuits of the town.

2/07/2008 | A LARGE number of concerned Esperance residents attended a community meeting at the Seafarer’s centre last Saturday, June 28, to hear the results of a report by the Conservation Council regarding lead in the Esperance environment. Results from a study by Dr Nic Dunlop were revealed, which showed bush birds in the Esperance region carried lead levels which were some of the highest in the world.

2/07/2008 | ESPERANCE Shire Council CEO, Mal Osborne, said a recent financial management review conducted by independent auditors UHY Haines Norton has been beneficial to the Shire. Mr Osborne said the review went into great detail regarding financial management at the shire – examining the appropriateness and effectiveness of the financial management systems and procedures of the Shire.
2/07/2008 | ESPERANCE Police are appealing to members of the public to come forward after two young people received serious burns at the Esperance skatepark earlier in the month.
Pool remains closed
2/07/2008 | THE Esperance Shire says that it can give no guarantee the Bay Of Isles Leisure Centre pool will be ready for public use within the next two months due to the ongoing gas crisis. Shire executive manager of community services Rod Hilton said repairs currently being undertaken to fix a leak in the bottom of the pool should be completed by late August, but if the pool is unable to be heated at that time it may not be re-opened.
Good old fashioned entertainment
2/07/2008 | Get yourself down to the Bijou Theatre this weekend for the annual senior citizens concert for a night of good old fashioned entertainment. Featuring singing, dancing, and plenty of laughs, the senior citizens concert will be a high-spirited event that is sure to bring a smile to your face and get your toes tapping. The main performance is on Friday at 7pm with matinee performances Saturday and Sunday at 2pm.
Birds still contaminated
30/06/2008 | A REPORT released by the Conservation Council of Western Australia (CCWA) today has found that, six months after the export of Magellan lead from the port had ceased, lead levels on the feathers of common bush birds in the Esperance area were among some of the highest ever recorded.
